When Dwight West, vocalist for Amiri Baraka's world traveled jazz ensemble BLU-ARK, began this endeavor of lyric-sizing some of the greatest instrumental tunes that never had lyrics, he realized that the melodies were genius. The music had a spirit and story of its own that was waiting to be told.
The accompaniment that Dwight envisioned doing these be-bop tunes such as Claudio Roditi on trumpet; T. K. Blue on alto; Clifford Adams of Kool & The Gang on trombone; Nat Adderley Jr., son of one the Jazz Masters, on piano; the swinging rhythm section of George Caldwell on piano, Michael Logan on bass, Greg Searvance and Greg Bufford on drums, recorded with enthusiasm and eager anticipation of the release date.
